“This is a real find; this Hotel has all the finest points of what hotels should be like today, this is rare in the UK and even rarer in Scotland. If you want to stay in real Scottish Hotel without the tartan, without the tourist touches and want real comfort, then this is the place for comfort, peace, personal attention and fine food.
I have stayed at this Hotel now on 3 occasions and each time I have found it to be even better than the last time. The Hotel is owned and managed by the MacPherson's and Stewart is determined to return the old country house to its former glory; like the days when Queen Victoria stayed here. He has consulted architects before replacing the original layout to the lower parts of the building and is committed to capturing the spirit of the other parts of the hotel in the future.
The hotel was built in 1821 and was the private residence of the MacKenzie family before being sold in 1949 and later again turned in a hotel. The village of Contin is about 20 miles north of Inverness and sits in beautiful grounds and is untouched in the way most hotels have now become with coach parties, signs, gates, plastic, impersonal staff etc.
We were greeted by the roaring log fires and a warmer welcome when we arrived. The rooms are comfortable and with wonderful views. Before dinner we had drinks in the bar which were served by Chris with delicious Greek olives
The dining room is impressive with its octagonal layout and windows onto the grounds and the views of the mountains in the background.
Gary, the chef delivers an excellent menu and all of it excellent. My wife's only complaint was with the calves liver which she had for her main course but this still scored 6 out of 10 with her. I had the most marvellous food including the home made game terrine, scallops with risotto and pudding. The wines are good, well priced and there is a wide selection.
Breakfast is another experience with choices which include the Poachers Breakfast, the Gardeners Breakfast, the Lairds Breakfast and many more surprises.
This Hotel will go from strength to strength, the business is up 30% in January.
